First day of Spring and a snowy NASCAR weekend in Bristol

Kingsport's Train Station

There’s one thing for certain about East Tennessee. You never know what to expect during the first days of Spring and this year, we’ve had more snow in March than we had all of November-February.

The first day of Spring we were treated to this scene at our downtown offices with snowflakes as big as half-dollars falling with the Kingsport train station in the background and this weekend, the 100,000 plus fans who attend the Food City 500 are going to hunkered in the stands with the threat of snow in the forecast too.

I was amused last night when one of my Google alerts sent a post from an Associated Press blogger who is staying in a hotel in Johnson City and here’s what he had to say about his job and his visit to JC.

But even if they called it a day, it’s not like there’s a whole lot to do on this trip. The media hotel is a dive in Johnson City, a room that probably goes for about $59 a night 50 weekends a year. But during a race, we pay over $200 a night to stay in a hovel I refuse to walk barefoot in and touch as few furnishings as I possibly can.

And it always seems that I get a room facing a highway, where every serial killer passing through East Tennessee could stop by to kick in my door and kill me. Hey — I watch “Dateline” a lot. That stuff happens.

Darryl Waltrip even mentioned on his published article at Fox

This whole Tri-Cities area is unpredictable because that’s the way this race certainly always is. It’s very unpredictable. You never know what’s going to happen next at this little bullring. It’s like the Bermuda Triangle. You fly in here, all kinds of weird things happen, and there’s no explanation for it.
