Fall Colors @ Beauty Spot

Locals call it “Beauty Spot” and that it is.

Saturday, we took the backroads to Erwin and traveled up Red Ford Road. At the top of the mountain, there’s a gravel road that travels 10 miles across the top of some of East Tennessee’s best vistas.

The sun was just starting to set when we had a chance to take in the scenes looking back toward Sam’s Gap. Mt. Mitchell was shrouded in clouds too and made for nice photos.

Dan and Tracy were with me and we shared a bottle of “Layer Cake” Malbec with a couple from Pulaski, VA that were watching the sunset too. Turned out they were distant relatives to the “man who hung the elephant in Erwin.” No joke.

I wouldn’t call it the peak weekend yet – that’s more than likely next weekend, but you gotta love the place we call home this time of year. Gas was a surprising $2.99 a gallon and the old jeep was a real trouper bouncing across the knobs this weekend.
