This is my last day on Earth as a 45-year old man. Tomorrow is my birthday and some some people believe the world will end.
That’s what skeptics say as the new multi-billion dollar experiment with the Hadron collector goes into operation tomorrow 300 feet underground in France and Switzerland.
On September 10th, scientists will conduct experiments that will accelerate sub-atomic particles across a 17 mile track built my several governments to explore the origins of the Universe.
They’ll fire these particles in opposite directions and crash them together to see what happens. Some believe this will expose amounts of energy that will answer questions about how the universe begin. Others claim, that this will lead to a black hole that will wipe out the planet – and spoil my birthday.
It’s clear to me that given a lack of information, people will most often come up with their own conclusions.
The History Channel is running documentaries on The Kennedy Assassination blaming everyone from the CIA, Cuba, the Mafia and Oliver Stone. I wasn’t aware of contemporary theorists who are suggesting that the tragedy at the World Trade Centers, one day after my birthday in 2001 was “an inside job.”
My apologies for making light of such tragedy on this day. Like most Americans, I know exactly where I was at on September 11th. We live in a very unusual time though and it’s hard to swallow the chaos that continues to manifest itself even today after a boundless era of evolution.
Life is fortunately still a mystery and I’m glad we don’t have all the answers. Makes it all that more interesting in my opinion, so if the world ends tomorrow, I’ll blow out the candles and quote the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy…”So long and thanks for all the fishes.“
