I found this interesting program from the Kingsport Speedway dated 1971 and it brought back a lot of memories of when me and my brother first started to get all excited about NASCAR. At the time, we lived in Nashville and Daryl Waltrip was winning all the Saturday night races and we couldn’t help but catch the fever as all those crazy fans gathered around to watch drivers scream around the concrete – crunching up their cars.
This little book is timely too because the Kingsport Speedway is scheduled to reopen this season and folks are driving in from all over the world this weekend to see the NEXTEL drivers race the world’s fastest half-mile track here in Bristol, TN.
The Food City 500 is big race and thousands will be in town this weekend and although I’ve been to the race several times, I find it more enjoyable to hang out with friends and watch it on TV than to wrestle with the crowds and suffer any injuries from ‘chicken bone alley.’
Printed in 1971, this book has some great photos of the legends; Richard Petty, Buddy Baker, David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Lee Roy Yaleborough, Benny Parsons and has some retro pictures of local drivers and advertisements from the era.
