This Sunday marks the birthdate of Elvis Presley – the King of Rock and Roll. He would have been 71.
Elvis has a distinct place in my memory because my parents loved him. It was the force that moved their generation. I remember the day he died too, but the old man continues to live on more than ever. Have you seen the website? You might want to get tickets to the big gala this weekend. Elvis is truly a great brand and even in death his fortune grows (despite what Lisa may have done to damage that image.)
When I moved to Kingsport, TN, a story emerged in my youth that Elvis once played our little town. According to legend, “The King” graced the stage of the Kingsport Civic Auditorium near Dobyns-Bennett High School back in the mid-fifties.
Vince Staten is the resident historian at the Times-News and he loves to share stories. When we met at the auditorium a couple of years ago, we kidded about the rumor and earlier today, he posted an itinerary of the Elvis Road show on his blog and he links to some new website called…’Elvis Day By Day’ that validates the September experience.
Hallowed ground indeed…. Happy Birthday Elvis – even if you have left the building. You left us with some great ones…and we’re thankful Lisa and Michael didn’t spawn anything out of the ordinary.
