Woodoak Server Update

It’s been in the making now for several weeks and the new server at Woodoak seems to be doing quite well and deserving of it’s own weblog and data history.

I began this server project in response to the decision to move all of my personal work and experiments off the enterprise servers at Times-News. We made a decision last year to transfer all systems operations to the Times-News IT department and those folks have built a very sophisticated, reliable XSAN server farm with no single point of failure. It only seems natural to vacate the premises though because true IT guys get awfully critical of people creating and playing as it where, Plus, it was a matter of privacy and also one of archival. It’s about time I took this seriously.

I set out to purchase a server that ran the Times-News Online succesfully from 2000 to 2005. ‘Pantheon’ as we called it was a twin processor Apple G-4 Server, described in this original post.

Things have been going great with the server up time and access speeds. I’m testing several media, photos, videos and other database content accessed via the music forum on GoTriCities and The Buzz. This decent bit of traffic has been interesting to watch in the logs and to test overall performances.

The OS is the OSX 10.30 build and it’s running MySQL, PHP and WebDNA. Several open-source applications are also running including this WordPress instance, PixelPost, phpMyAdmin, phpBB and others.

Yesterday, another 120 gb hard-drive arrived that is acting as a redundant backup and it won’t be long before this obsession with a bigger monitor lands me with another flat panel. I’m using a small flat panel, translucent 15″ Apple Monitor now, but I’m envious for a larger screen.
