Those are the words of Tim Long in a recent article for Wired magazine and we may have something in common. In a previous life, it’s possible I was a Luddite. Perhaps the reason for my suspicion is the funny feeling in my stomach when I realize technology seems to have its own agenda.
There’s no bone in me that supposes a conspiracy. IMO it’s an evolution of our species. You can blame that on Kurzweil, but it’s true. Transhumanism is starting to make more sense anyway because how can we ever lay down all of the great new conveniences, tools and toys that technology has spawned?
Long is a copy editor and his editorial titled ‘The Dark Underbelly of Technology‘ had a compelling enough headline for me to read along. After all, Clifford Stoll knocked some sense (or nonsense) in my mind in the late nineties and it’s been a long time since I’ve heard anything stark.
Long might have been a Luddite too and although he laments that some think him a crackpot, these comments and awareness of our obsession with consumption is a wake-up call to all who are ‘jacked in.’
Hey. I could use a little ‘off the grid’ anyway. Imagine that? Anyone want to start a business for technical escapism?
